The single a mix of pop music and reggaeton not only brought renewed attention to reggaeton but it also brought attention to Latin music more generally. Billboard's Top 100 had four songs during 2016, which was compared with two songs in the year 2015. During the height of Despacito's popularity in 2017, 19 mostly Spanish songs made it onto the Top 100 In 2020, the number of songs that made it was 41. After Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in 2017, many popular musicians began to join forces with reggaeton performers. Drake and Bad Bunny collaborated to record MIA (2018) and Madonna and Maluma joined forces on Medellin 2019, which was released in 2019. Reggaeton's most prominent performers expressed their displeasure at the rise of popular music coming into 2020. A new band, Rauw alejandro, was looking to change things up. His style often included elements of electronic dance music, along with other styles.
